What is scale of analysis?
The geographic level at which data or a spatial pattern is examined, such as local, regional, national, or global. This is different from map scale, which describes the relationship between distance on a map and distance on Earth.
What is hierarchical diffusion?
The spread of an idea or trait from influential people, places, or nodes to other people or places. A trend spreading from a major cultural center to smaller cities is one possible pattern.
What is an internally displaced person (IDP)?
A person forced to leave home who remains within the borders of their own country. Crossing an international border changes the relevant migration category.
What is devolution?
The transfer of political power from a central government to regional or local governments. APHG questions often ask students to connect devolution to regional identity, political pressure, or centrifugal forces.
What is gentrification?
A process of neighborhood reinvestment and change that can raise property values and costs and may displace lower-income residents. Students should be able to explain both landscape change and social consequences.
What is a commodity chain?
The linked stages and places involved in producing, distributing, and consuming a good. Commodity chains help geographers analyze globalization and spatial divisions of labor.
